Her first trip to Mysore was in 2001, and she’s had yearly trips ever since. Liz will be assisting Sharath Jois in the Mysore shala for one month just before arriving in Kuala Lumpur in December 2011. During the past seven years, she has taught classes, workshops and private lessons all over Europe and south Asia.

Liz teaches Asthanga Vinyasa yoga in the traditional Mysore style, as the practice has been taught to her. In this way, the needs of each and every student can be considered individually. Different Perspective

In the quiet morning, as I raise my hands up for the first sun salute, I wonder how this is important after what had happened last Friday. Makes you see the bigger picture – the small knee injury last October really is a tiny blip compared with the unimaginable losses suffered in Japan.

As the practice went on, so I guess the world goes on. We do the best we can with what we have. We make progress and there are always the wipeouts that threaten to make or break us. But, invariably, the human spirit will take what there is and make the best of it.

My practice ended. I took my shower and got dressed for work. It’s Monday.

I’m on my last legs with regards to blogging. My blog is now reduced to a message board highlighting ashtanga happenings in KL – even then, this latest update is already late by at least 10 days.

Practice with Manuel is going really well. He seems to know what to look out for with someone with knee injuries. For example, just a shift in the alignment of the sole will take the stretch away from the LCL and take the focus more on the hip. I can now put my hands down on the right side of Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana (without the bind, of course). Slowly, slowly, things are coming back. There is hope!

Hope, though, on the regularity of this blog seems bleak. The only thing that makes me feel guilty about not posting seems to be updates. Even then, it took an enforced break from the World of Warcraft that gave me the push to overcome the blogging inertia. So, all that’s left now is to wish everyone happy and regular practices!

Actually I was going to restart the blog with a bang, explanations of the absence and followed by step by step journal-like entries on my road to recovery. That all seemed too daunting to start, and the longer I procrastinated, the more interesting the post needed to be. Finally, the new year is here and, heck with it being interesting, I’m just going to plunge right in.

So, I tore my knee ligaments in October. As a skiing holiday was already planned for the family in December, I began the mad rush to rehab the knee and get it ready for the trip. So, basically, very little yoga - in part due to some annoying yoga related comments.

The one that comes to mind is that of going to the gym goes the opposite to where yoga leads to. Huh?? According to this fellow, yoga is all about surrendering whilst lifting weights is all about showing off. I’m sorry but that is just bull to me. Not that I said it out loud. I think intention behind what one does, be it gym exercises or practicing asanas, is the real factor here. Surely some yoga practitioners show off, too, from time to time ie via pictures or videos (like me!) Anyway, whatever. Just a rant.

In short, rehab at the GYM got me through my skiing holiday. And no, I have not given up on yoga. I did practice on Monday and today (Thursday). Lost all Ardha Baddha (half lotus) poses on the injured side. Also lost Mari C. Did not try Mari D, of course. This journey back is going to be a hard lesson on non-attachment. And patience. And acceptance. And lots of mindful practice. And so begins the new year!
